In Our Own Words, presents a creative chronicle of the African American experience through short stories by iconic and lesser-known black writers, some of whom could not get past the publishing 'filters' they encountered. The concept for the series is grounded in self-definition paired with concerns regarding the degrading, shallow images of African Americans, that are too prevalent in corporate controlled media.

Black writers have defined their own world, moving beyond the traditional definitions often imposed on them. This project is a vehicle to bring the "song" of African American short stories, a largely unexplored body of work, to a broader audience. Leading literary scholars will curate the short stories. Emmy award winning independent filmmaker, Dante James will produce and direct and/or oversee production of the films. The Doll the critically acclaimed first film of the series based on a short story by Charles W. Chesnutt was completed several years ago.

After premiering on broadcast and/or cable additional profit streams for In Our Own Words, include PBS, schools, libraries and video streaming. International nontheatrical digital distribution options offer further marketing opportunities as there is a worldwide market for Black American culture/literature/film. The series will have global appeal particularly in Africa, South America, the Caribbean and Cuba.

Resources from external entities often come with editorial and artistic constraints. In Our Own Words, must be produced unencumbered by outside entities. BPMW is seeking additional investors/partners from those who recognize the domestic and international profit potential of the project, appreciate black culture and literature and are concerned about the shallow interpretations of black experiences. BPMW is not opposed to resources from outside our community but artistic and editorial control is a prerequisite. This project is representative of Dante's desire to explore humanity through the lens of the black experience 'unfiltered' by the dominate culture.
